Counseling Services

Our Services to Students

Classroom Counseling

All students participate in classroom lessons led by the school counselor. These lessons focus on important skills such as social–emotional growth, academic success, and early college and career awareness — all taught in a fun, age-appropriate way.

Individual Counseling

Students may meet one-on-one with the counselor for short-term support. These sessions help address challenges that might be getting in the way of their success at school, whether academic, social, or personal.

Small Group Counseling

Throughout the year, the counselor leads small groups of 3–5 students who share similar goals or experiences. These groups provide a safe space to learn, practice skills, and support one another.

How Elementary Counselors Help

The Reason for Elementary Counselors

The elementary years are a time when students begin to develop their academic self-concept and their feelings of competence and confidence as learners. They are beginning to develop decision-making, communication and life skills, as well as character values. It is also a time when students develop and acquire attitudes toward school, self, peers, social groups and family. Comprehensive developmental school counseling programs provide education, prevention and intervention services, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. Early identification and intervention of children’s academic and personal/social needs is essential in removing barriers to learning and in promoting academic achievement. The knowledge, attitudes and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career and personal/social development during these elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.

Elementary school counselors are educators uniquely trained in child development, learning strategies, self management and social skills, who understand and promote success for today’s diverse students. They implement a school counseling program to support students through this important developmental period. The program provides education, prevention and intervention activities, which are integrated into all aspects of children’s lives. The program teaches knowledge, attitudes and skills students need to acquire in academic, career and social/emotional development, which serve as the foundation for future success.
